Building A Bridge:
The AFT and Brown v Board of Education

< Home
On May 17, 1954 the United States Supreme Court released an eleven-page decision that stated separate but equal in the American public schools violated the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution. This was the historic Brown v. Board of Education decision and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the ruling that brought the promise of equality to the entire nation.

The American Federation of Teachers was the only education organization to file an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief in support of Brown v Board of Education. In doing so, the AFT also took a stand to integrate its own locals. It was one of the most trying and difficult times for the union. This exhibit explores how the AFT built a bridge to close the gap of racial inequality.
