William C. Marshall was born in Tunica, Mississippi on May 25, 1921. Mr. Marshall joined Amalgamated Transit Union Local #1127 while working as a bus driver for Trailways in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1942. He served as a committeeman and board member for Local #1127. In 1948 Mr. Marshall moved to Detroit, began working for Greyhound, and transferred to Motor Coach Employees Union Local #1303. Between 1948 and 1958 he served as president and business manager for Local #1303. He was also chairman of the national council of Greyhound Bus Drivers and an organizer for the Motor Coach Employees International Union.
Mr. Marshall served as the Michigan AFL-CIO’s executive vice-president from 1959-69, secretary-treasurer from 1969-1971, and president from 1971 until his retirement in 1983. He also held many positions in local and state labor federations. He was a member of the executive board of the Detroit and Wayne County Federation of Labor from 1953-1958, the Michigan AFL-CIO from 1958-60, and the Wayne County AFL-CIO from 1958-60.
The papers of the Michigan AFL-CIO: William C. Marshall Collection consist of materials relating to Mr. Marshall’s tenure as Michigan AFL-CIO president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer. They include documents from Michigan AFL-CIO conventions, political action programs and elections, community activities, and the organization’s relationship with affiliated labor bodies.
