The papers of Harry E. Lester were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban affairs in March of 1981 by Mr. Lester and were opened for research in April of 1985.
Harry E. Lester was born in Bud, West Virginia on August 21, 1929. He graduated with honors from Herndon High School, Wyoming County, WestVirginia and subsquently graduated from Wyoming County Trade School. He began his union activities as a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Firemen and Engineers in West Virginia in the late 'forties and early 'fifties. He joined the United Steel Workers of America in 1954 and was elected President of Local 2659, McLouth Steel Co., Michigan in 1962. He served as President of Local 2659 for three terms prior to his being selected to serve on the International Staff of District 29 of the steel workers union.
In addition to his work with the steel workers union, Mr. Lester was active in the field of labor education and served on numerous advisory committees of the University of Michigan, Wayne State University and the University of Toledo.
The papers of Mr. Lester consist of flyers and announcements relating to his campaign for the position of Director of District 29 of the United Steel Workers of America conducted in the fall of 1980 and the spring of 1981.
Campaign memorabilia consisting of one bumper sticker, a badge, and match-covers have been placed in the Archives Audio-Visual Collections
