Scope & Contents

Icie Gertrude Macy Hoobler was the director of chemical and biological research at the Nutrition Research Laboratory of the Merrill-Palmer Institute and the Children’s Hospital of Michigan from 1923 until 1930.  She was then appointed Director of the Children’s Fund of Michigan Research Laboratory, where she served until her retirement in 1954.  Hoobler died in 1983.

Born near Gallatin, Missouri in 1892, Hoobler earned an undergraduate degree with a teaching certificate in music at the Central College for Women in Lexington, Missouri, where she developed an interest in science as well as social issues.  In 1916 she graduated from the University of Chicago with a bachelor of science degree and two years later earned an M.S. from the University of Colorado.  Hoobler became the fourth woman to receive a Ph.D. from the Department of Physiological Chemistry of the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University in 1920.  Before coming to Detroit, she taught in the Department of Household Science at the University of California at Berkeley.

Icie G. Macy Hoobler was a pioneer in the study of infant, child and adolescent growth and nutrition.  She conducted some of the first studies on mother’s milk and developed the first metabolic studies of pregnant women, which led to the establishment of nutritional needs during pregnancy.  Hoobler also studied the composition of cow’s milk and was instrumental in determining the appropriate amount of Vitamin D to be added to milk to prevent children from getting rickets.  Other research related to amino acids and Vitamin C and the prevention of scurvy.

Hoobler was involved in many professional societies and organizations.  She was president of the National Institution of Nutrition, served on the White House Conference on Child Health and Protection in 1930, was a fellow of the American Public Health Association and was the first woman president of the American Chemical Society.

The Merrill-Palmer Institute: Icie G. Macy Hoobler Collection consists primarily of material relating to her research, including reports, papers, reference and lecture materials, and correspondence.  Also included are publications she authored or co-authored, materials relating to conferences at which she spoke or attended, her student course work and research at the University of Colorado and Yale University and her brief teaching career at the University of California.
