Scope & Contents

Ernest Rutherford Groves was born on May 6, 1877 at Framingham, Massachusetts.  After graduation from high school, he entered Yale Divinity School and received a B.D. in 1901.  Two years later he earned a B.A. from Dartmouth College and took a job teaching sociology at the University of New Hampshire.  After a brief stint teaching English at Dartmouth, he returned to the University of New Hampshire in 1909 and five years later became dean of the Arts College.  From there he moved to Boston University in 1920, where he developed the first credit course on marriage and the family, and then, in 1927, to the University of North Carolina as professor of sociology and research professor in the Institute for Research in Social Science. He died August 29, 1946.

A pioneer among educators on sex, marriage and the family, Groves authored and co-authored several books on marriage and family life, including The American Family, Parents and Children, The American Woman, and The Family and Its Social Functions, and contributed articles to a number of scientific journals and popular magazines.  He and his wife, social worker and educator Gladys Hoagland Groves, with whom he collaborated on a number of writing projects, supported the birth control and sex education movements.

The papers of Ernest R. Groves consist of correspondence with colleagues, publishers, and readers of his articles, manuscript drafts, teaching and research files, and conference materials reflecting his professional interests in sex, marriage and the family.  Additional material relating to the Groves Conferences on Marriage and Family Life may be found in the Merrill-Palmer Institute: Kresge Historical Library Collection.
