The beginnings of the
Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America in Detroit go back to 1896, when the
Journeymen Tailors, now Local 229 of the Detroit and Midwestern Joint Board,
first organized. Local 229 became
a part of the Amalgamated in 1936.
A year later, cleaners and dyers Local 124 was organized under the
Amalgamated banner. During the
1940s, the Amalgamated began organizing among laundry workers and retail and
department store employees, who were organized into the Central States Joint
Board.
The Amalgamated Clothing
Workers of America Detroit and Midwestern States Joint Board Collection
consists of board minutes and financial reports of the Detroit and Midwestern
States Joint Board and member locals.
