Scope & Contents
The papers of the Bricklayers and Masons' International Union of America (B.M.I.U.) were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in August of 1983 by Dennis E. Meissner, Senior Records Analyst, Division of Archives and Manuscripts, Minnesota Historical Society, and were opened for research in July of 1990.
The B.M.I.U. was a successor to the Bricklayers International Union of the United States of North America, founded in 1865. In 1910, the B.M.I.U. became interested in organizing plasterers and the union's title became the Bricklayers, Mason, and Plasterers International Union of America.
The papers of the B.M.I.U. consist primarily of circulars and announcements sent out by the executive board of the B.M.I.U. plus documents distributed by the locals of the B.M.I.U. throughout the country for the years 1889 to 1982. The papers of the executive board of the B.M.I.U. are arranged in chronological order. The papers of the locals are arranged alphabetically by the states in which the locals were located.
