UAW Region 1 was established in 1942 and, until its merger with Region 1B in 1989, served the east side of Detroit and Macomb and St. Clair Counties. In 1966 the International Executive Board split Region 1 and its west-side counterpart, Region 1A, into four parts (called Regions 1, 1A, 1B, and 1E). In addition to plants from the Big Three automakers in Detroit and the defunct American Motors Corporation, Region 1 has represented workers in parts and supply plants such as The Budd Company, Federal Mogul’s Bower Roller Bearing, and Mueller Brass.
The records of UAW Region 1 consist of correspondence, internal memoranda, minutes, reports, and printed material documenting contract negotiations, the grievance process, organizing activities and the region’s involvement in civic and political affairs.
