Scope & Contents

Stephen Schlossberg was General Counsel for the UAW from 1963 until 1978.  From 1978 until his retirement from the UAW in 1981, he directed the union’s Government and Public Affairs Division.  From 1981 to 1985 he practiced labor law in Washington, D.C.  William Brock, President Reagan’s Labor Secretary, hired Schlossberg as Deputy Undersecretary for Labor-Management Relations in 1985.

Prior to his work for the UAW, Schlossberg managed a department store in Roanoke, Virginia (1946-50) and worked as an organizer and organizing director for the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union.  Schlossberg later practiced law with the firm Van Arkel and Kaiser in Washington, D.C.  In the early sixties, he taught law part-time at Georgetown University while working for the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service as Special Assistant to the Director.

The Stephen Schlossberg collection contains correspondence, legal briefs and working papers, reports, newspaper clippings, and memoranda relating to his work on legal, political, and legislative issues.  The collection also contains material on the Committee for National Health Insurance, an organization closely affiliated with the UAW.
