Scope & Contents

The papers of Ed Liska were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs by Mr. Liska in June of 1991 and opened for research in May of 2002.

Ed Liska was active in UAW Local 3 (Chrysler's Dodge Main plant) affairs from the 1940's. A Rank and File caucus activist in the plant in the 1950's, he was elected chairman of the Body Shop Unit in 1960, recording secretary of the local in 1962 and president in 1968, serving until 1972. His presidency coincided with a turbulent period in the union's history, when the black revolutionary union movements (RUMs) emerged to challenge working conditions and racism in the auto plants. The Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement (DRUM), which was formed in May of 1968 in the wake of a wildcat strike to protest line speed-up at Dodge Main, was the first of the RUMs to emerge in Detroit.

The Ed Liska Collection consists of detailed reports of meetings, discussions and other activities at Dodge Local 3 recorded by President Liska from June, 1969 through June, 1972. It also contains minutes of contract negotiation and grievance meetings he kept as the local's recording secretary. Files are arranged chronologically.
