Scope & Contents

UAW Local 72 formed initially as AFL-Federal Labor Union 19008 in Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1933. Shortly after the founding of the United Autoworkers in 1935, the local rechartered as AFL-UAW Local 72, representing workers at the Kenosha Nash (later AMC) plant. In 1950, the local won its first pension and insurance plan under the leadership of President Mike Maxin. In the early 1950s, Walter Vaughn became the first black member of the Local 72 Executive Board. Ralph Daum, a former Chief Steward in the Press Room, served the longest term as President of the local between 1967 and 1978.

The papers of UAW Local 72 consist of minutes and correspondence of the Joint Council, Pension, Trial, and By-Laws Committees proceedings, reports, news releases, resolutions, job transfer lists, grievances, and strike material.
