Scope & Contents

In 1957, UAW representatives created Local 36 to service autoworkers newly hired or drafted from Locals 400, 600 and 900 to build Lincolns and Thunderbirds at Ford’s Wixom plant.  Sam Fishman, a UAW activist with Local 400 who later was elected president of the Michigan AFL-CIO, became the first president of Local 36 and held the position from 1957 to 1962.

The papers of UAW Local 36, which consist primarily of a full set of membership and executive board meeting minutes drawn from a 30-year period, document the local’s strike activity in 1958 and 1967 as well as longstanding concerns such as line speeds, hours, manpower, health and safety, outsourcing and benefits.
