Scope & Contents

The Charles K. Hyde Michigan Documentation Collection was opened for research in August of 1997.  Professor Hyde is a member of the Department of History at Wayne State University, where he teaches the history of technological development in Europe and the United States.  The collection consists principally of reports he prepared for the National Park Service’s Historic American Engineering Record and Historic American Buildings Survey. The reports, which provide historical and architectural information about significant  engineering projects and (primarily) industrial structures in the Detroit area from the 1850s through the 1940s, were created to preserve a permanent record of the original site prior to renovation or demolition. The report on the UAW Local 7 Hall was prepared by Professor Thomas Klug of the Marygrove College Department of History.  Related material on buildings in the Poletown area may be found in the William Kessler and Associates Collection.
