Scope & Contents

Newman Jeffrey was born in Topeka, Kansas on March 27, 1910.  After graduation from the University of Kansas in 1932, he joined the Socialist Party organization and in 1934 was hired by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers as organizer and labor educator.

During World War II, Mr. Jeffrey served as Chief of the Labor Division of the Office of Civilian Defense and, after the war, as Chief of the Labor Relations Section, Manpower Division of the U. S. military government in Germany.  From 1946 to 1959, he worked as a UAW international representative.  After retiring from the UAW, he received his Master’s in history from Wayne State University and took a job teaching at the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations.  In the early 1960s, Mr. Jeffrey joined the Kennedy administration’s Agency for International Development and was appointed director of, first, the Uganda Mission and later the one in Sierra Leone.  He returned to the United States in 1969 and joined the staff of the National Archives as a public information officer.  Newman Jeffrey died in November of 1993.

The Newman Jeffrey Collection contains correspondence, material related to his biography of George Henry Evans, clippings, pamphlets and other printed items reflecting his lifelong interest in labor history and his career in labor and politics.
