Scope & Contents

The papers of the UAW Local 600 were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in March of 1967, and were opened for research in April of 1983.

UAW Local 600 was chartered August 9, 1938, but did not gain much worker support until the Rouge plant-wide strike of April 1, 1941.  The first UAW contract with Ford Motor Company was signed June 20, and ratified by the Local July 22, 1941.  In 1949 Local 600 called a strike against Ford over the issue of speed-up on the assembly lines.  Numerous Local 600 officers were the target of anti-communist investigations during the McCarthy era, and investigations by the Un-American Activities Committee began as early as 1947.  With 50,000 to 80,000 members in various periods, Local 600 has been both the largest and the most controversial local in the UAW, and was a center of anti-Reuther sentiment.

Local 600 was organized into separate plant units.  During the period 1941-1950, there were as many as nineteen.  Each unit sent delegates to a General Council which determined the policies of the Local, and occasional mass meetings were held.

This collection consists mainly of the minutes and reports of the Executive Council, which met weekly.  An index to important subjects in the minutes will be found on pages 4 through 7.
