Scope & Contents

The papers of the UAW Recreation Department were deposited with the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in1963 and were opened for research in April of 1966. Additional papers were placed in the Archives in October of 1984 and were opened for research in May of 1986.

The UAW Department of Recreation originated as a program of the UAW Education Department which was created by a resolution at the 1935 Convention. Funds for Education and Recreational were separated at the 1939 Convention action in 1953Required all local union, but many locals had done so prior to this formal mandate.

In May, 1937, Melvin G. West became the first Director of the Department, Olga M. Madar became acting Director of the Department in late 1946, subsequently receiving official appointment to this position in 1947. Madar was elected to the UAW Executive Board in 1966 and in 1972 was elected a Vice-President of the Board.

The Recreation Department was known as the Department of Recreation and Leisure Time Activities by 1968 and by 1970 it was known as the Conservation and Resource Development and Recreation and Leisure Time Activities Department.

The papers in Part 1 of the UAW Recreation Department reflect the activities of this department in achieving desegregation of the National Bowling Congress, operating camps for the children of Union members and encouraging local union recreational programs in addition to correspondence of its Director, Olga M. Madar.

The papers in Part 2 include the records of a demonstration project, directed by Mary Williams, entitled: Deprived Areas Recreation Team (DART) which officially began in January, 1967. The purpose of this project was to unite various block and neighborhood groups in their efforts to seek more open space and more appropriate recreational facilities for those deprived areas of the inner city of Detroit. In addition, there are some items relating to conservation issues that were prepared by the Department for the 1972 Presidential campaign.
