Return to Containers

Subseries A: General Files, 1936‑1946, Boxes 2‑17:

Files relating to Reuther's work as a member of the International

Executive Board to which he was elected in 1936 and as a vice

president of the union, an office to which he was elected in 1942.

During this period he also directed the Skilled Trades Department

and Region 1A and headed the War Manpower and Consumer's

Division.  Files relate to a wide range of subjects, including

conventions, war production and factionalism and contain

information on specific locals and regions.  Material is arranged

         alphabetically by subject.

Subseries B: General Motors Department, 1936‑1946, Boxes 17‑28:

Files of the General Motors Department, established in 1938, which

Reuther directed from 1939 through 1948.  This subseries contains a

small amount of material relating to the period before the

department was created and before Reuther became director.  It

documents the period of Reuther's administration until his election to

the presidency of the union.  Material relates to general UAW‑GMC

relations, GM locals, negotiations, war production and the 1945‑46

strike.  Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.

Subseries C: Government War Production Agencies, 1941‑1945, Boxes 29‑33:

Material relating to Reuther's work as a labor representative with the

Office of Production Management and the War Manpower

Commission during World War II.  There is also material concerning

other agencies involved in war production administration.  These

files deal with the interaction of the UAW with the government during

the war and attempts to secure a greater voice for labor at the

policy‑making level.  Material relating to war productioncan also be

found in Subseries A and B.  Files are arranged alphabetically by

         subject.
