Scope & Contents

The Teacher Corps was a national organization created in the 1960s.  Its goal was to remedy the teacher shortage in poorer school districts.  The National Defense Education Act Institute funded this program.  The Wayne State University program, sponsored by the College of Education, attempted to generate interest in the Detroit area inner city schools with the hope of recruitment.  The interns selected for the Wayne State University Teacher's Corps were not required to have Bachelor's degrees in education, only an interest in teaching.  Teacher Corps interns would work on a Master's in Education while simultaneously gaining practical teaching experience by working with a team of other interns in teaching in the Detroit Public Schools.

The College of Education identified incoming groups of interns by cycles or approximate entrance and exit dates to the program.  Teacher Corps' internships lasted approximately two to three years.  Each class of interns was divided into smaller groups called teams.  Each team consisted of a group of interns and a more experienced team leader who would work together to create classroom lesson plans and participate in workshops to improve teaching methodology.

The collection is arranged by cycles, chronologically  within the cycles and alphabetically within the dates in the cycles.  The collection has information about Cycles I-V, predominantly on Cycle V, approximately seven folders on Cycle VII, and no information about Cycle VI.
