Scope & Contents

An expanding economy and union movement prompted the UAW to subdivide its two southeastern Michigan regional jurisdictions into four southeastern Michigan regions—1, 1A, 1B, and 1E—in 1966.  The reorganization was designed to give locals closer contact with their regional directors.  Barden Young, a longtime co-director of Region 1A, headed Region 1E for the majority of its 18-year history.  When Young retired in 1983, he was succeeded by Frank Runnels, who served as director of Region 1E until a 1984 UAW special convention resolution brought it back under the aegis of 1A.  For a short time, the region was known as 1A-E.

The UAW Region 1E Collection contains many records kept by local and regional officers prior to their affiliation with Region 1E in 1966 as well as records created after the organization of the region.  These include correspondence, reports, minutes, grievance files, publications, and other material documenting post-World War II and Cold War organizing drives, collective bargaining, working conditions, and political activity.
