The papers of Henry Richardson Linville were deposited in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in December of 1969 and January of 1970 by his children, Rhoda Eichholz and Byron Linville.

Henry Richardson Linville was born August 12, 1866 in St. Joseph, Missouri.  He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas in 1893, after which he attended Harvard University, receiving a bachelor's degree in 1894, a master's degree in 1895 and a doctorate in 1897.

Mr. Linville served as head of the Biology Department at DeWitt Clinton High School in New York City (1897-1908) and then at Jamaica High School on Long Island (1908-1921).  He was elected president of the Teachers' Union of New York City in 1916 and served as president and executive director until 1935.  Mr. Linville also worked as editor of The American Teacher, the official newspaper of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), during this period.  In 1931 he was elected president of the AFT and acted in that capacity until 1934.  The following year he became president of the New York Teachers Guild.  Mr. Linville was killed in an automobile accident in North Carolina on October 1, 1941.
