The records of the Campus Beautification Committee were given to the Archives in 1976 and 1986 by Olga Dworkin, the Committee Chairperson. The collection reflects the activities of the Committee, the chairperson and the resulting changes in Wayne State University's main and medical school campuses. It documents the development of malls, art, and landscaping to harmonize the University's old and new structures.
The need for the Campus Beautification Committee was initially conceived during the University's Centennial Anniversary. In May of 1968, the Wayne State Fund, on behalf of the alumni, donated funding to beautify the area between the College of Education Building and the University Center (the Student Center Building). The resulting Alumni Centennial Court was dedicated November 1, 1969.
In June of 1968, the Wayne State Fund Board of Directors voted to undertake, through private funding, a three million dollar campus beautification program. The first meeting of the Campus Beautification Committee, chaired by Olga Dworkin, was held November 14, 1970. The Committee worked in close co-ordination with Vice President George E. Gullen, Jr. and reported to the Executive Board of the Wayne State Fund. Gullen was later appointed acting President in 1971 and President in 1972. Dworkin, an alumni, chaired the Committee and was the main catalyst for beautification activities.
