Scope & Contents
In 1951, the Council of Social Agencies and the Community Chest of Metropolitan Detroit merged to form United Community Services (UCS). The new organization, a federation of public and private social service agencies, was responsible for planning and research to determine the social welfare and health care needs of Detroiters and the allocation of charitable contributions collected by Detroit’s federated charitable campaign, the Torch Drive.
The UCS Research Department set up the Studies and Reports Collection in 1975 as a reference library for staffers and other researchers as well as to document the history of UCS’s service to the community.
The collection consists of studies and reports prepared by United Community Services staff and committees on a variety of issues and programs conducted under UCS auspices as well as those prepared by outside experts and organizations working in the field of social welfare.
