The papers of the United Community Services Women's Committee were transferred from the Burton Historical Collection of the Detroit Public Library in 1989 and were opened by the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs for research in March of 1994.
In 1935 a group of twenty-five women founded the Women's Mobilization Committee for Human Needs for the purpose of informing Detroiters about area social welfare agencies and building support for them within the community. In 1960, by which time the organization had become the United Community Services Women's Committee, the group boasted 5,000 active volunteers and was reaching out in a variety of ways. Community Clinics informed people about the Women's Committee's mission. The Committee offered Social Clinics to discuss community needs and maintained a Speakers Bureau in which experts talked about social problems in Detroit. A group of Friendly Visitors traveled the area to meet the needs of sick and elderly persons who had no other base of support. And the organization's annual Presidents' Day brought together leaders of women's organizations to discuss how they could work together to better assist the community.
The papers of the Women's Committee include correspondence, reports, minutes, programs, and other material relating to the organization's activities in metropolitan Detroit from its inception.
