The papers of Charles Gentile were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in October of 1970 by Mr. Gentile and were opened for research in March of 1985.
Charles Gentile began work at the Briggs Manufacturing Company in 1931 and joined the Society of Designing Engineers (S.D.E.) in 1932. In later years he held numerous union posts in UAW Local 212, the S.D.E. in the Briggs Manufacturing Company. He served on the Executive Board of Local 212, for several terms, and was a member of the Finance Committee for six years, and for twelve years was an elected trustee of Local 212. Mr. Gentile retired in 1970.
The papers of Mr. Gentile relate primarily to the S.D.E. which was Detroit Chapter 201 of the International Federation of Architects, Engineers, Chemists, and Technicians, (F.A.E.C.T.) from 1938 to 1943 when it disaffiliated with the F.A.E.C.T. and became affiliated with UAW-CIO as Local 212 Briggs Manufacturing Company.
The papers in this collection include documents relating to the factionalism within the F.A.E.C.T. which led to the D.S.E's disaffiliation plus subsequent contract and wage negotiations of Local 212 with the Briggs Manufacturing Company.
Approximately fifteen scattered issues of local union newspapers plus some half-dozen pamphlets relating to the Detroit Council, Society of Designing Engineers received with this collection have been placed in the Archives Library.
