Scope & Contents

Raymond W. Hood was born in Detroit, Michigan in January, 1938.  His father, Morris W. Hood, Sr., was a longtime UAW activist working on the staff of the International.  Raymond Hood graduated from Detroit’s Central High School and attended Fullerton Junior College in California.  In 1965, he was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives from Detroit’s 7th District.  While a member of the state Legislature, he served on a number of committees, including Labor, Mental Health, Public Health, Environment, Recreation and Conservation, and in 1969 was elected Democratic Majority Whip.  He also served as a trustee of the Michigan Democratic Black Caucus.  After Mr. Hood left the state legislature in 1978, he became director of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulations.

The Raymond W. Hood Collection consists of committee files, constituent mail, correspondence, reports and other publications reflecting his committee assignments while a member of the Michigan state Legislature.
