In 1942, teachers in Kansas City, Missouri formed a local union affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers. The papers of AFT Local 691 consist of correspondence, reports, minutes, clippings and publications documenting contract negotiations, strikes, and grievance arbitration as well as educational reform, the rivalry between the AFT and the National Education Association, and the fight over desegregation of the Kansas City schools.
