Scope & Contents
The papers of Homer Martin were deposited in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in 1961 by Mr. Martin.
Homer Martin was born on September 16, 1901 in Illinois. After high school he attended Hewing College and received his AB from William Jewel College. Martin then attended the Kansas City Baptist Theological Seminary for two years.
After serving in Baptist churches in Goreville, Illinois and Kansas City, Missouri, Martin went to work in the auto plants of Kansas City. He soon became active in the union movement and was appointed a Vice-President of the UAW-AFL in 1935. In 1936 he was elected President of what came to be the UAW-CIO.
Martin served as UAW-CIO President until 1939, at which time he reorganized the UAW-AFL and became that body's President until 1941 when he left the auto union movement.
