Press
Associates, Inc., originally called Press Associates—PAI, was organized
in June, 1954 in Washington, D. C. as an independent news, feature, and photo
service for the American labor press under the direction of veteran
newspaperman Alexander Uhl and labor journalist Harry Conn. It drew heavily upon the resources of
the Public Affairs Institute (PAI), a nonprofit research and information agency
founded in 1947 and largely supported by the nation’s labor unions.
The
collection consists entirely of the weekly news release packets issued by Press
Associates, Inc.
A large
number of news photographs and editorial cartoons have been placed in the
Archives Audiovisual Collection.
