Marjorie Stern was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 2, 1918. She acquired a bachelor’s degree in Social Science and Homemaking in 1958 and a Master's degree in Sociology and Anthropology in 1965 front San Francisco State College. Series 1

International and State Federations of Teachers' Activities 1968‑78

The papers in this series primarily concern Ms. Stern's activity in various committees created inside of the California Federation of Teachers (C.F.T.), and the Seattle Federation of Teachers for the year 1972. Most of these committees were formed to analyze and support from inside of the union the broader issued of American women's movement. A smaller amount of flyers, clippings, resolutions and reports concern general union activities such as the Conventions of C.F.T. and the negotiations during the San Francisco teachers' strike of 1971. Statements of various unions, including the American Federation of Teachers, on affirmative action and the Equal Rights Amendment are also located in this series. The correspondence related to these activities is gathered in the Series III of the present collection; however, letters of transmittal of research papers and resolutions have been left in this series. A small number of letters related to the C.F.T. 1977 Convention Workshops and to the United Teacher Press Association can also be found in this series (Box 1, folder 12 and Box 2, folder 5). Subjects are organized alphabetically.

Series II

         I

Women’s organizations

1972-1985

This series contains clippings, flyers, programs, and resolutions relative to conferences, meetings and conventions of women's organizations, either outside of the union movement (like the international Women's Year) or inside of it, but on a nationwide and intercategorical basis (like the Coalition of Labor Union Women, further referred to as C.L.U.W.). Two small collections of newspapers and newspaper clippings, intermingled with Ms. Stern's notes, also belong to this series. The largest amount of documentation concerns the International Women's Year. The International Convention of the I.W.Y. was held in Mexico City in July 1975; eventually a commission for the observance of the I.W.Y. was created in the United States, with the purpose of diffusing the results and statements of the Mexican convention. The U.S. committee organized in 1977 a series of state conventions, among which the California State Meeting which was held in Stanford in June 1977; the state conventions led to a National Women's Conference, held in Houston (Texas) in November 1977. The three conferences (Mexico City, Stanford and Houston) are organized in this series under the general title of I.W.Y.; general subjects, as for the Series 1, follow the alphabetical order. A small amount of correspondence may be found in Box 2, folder 26 and Box 4, folder 6. The remaining letters related to the subjects of this series are filed in the Series III of the present collection.
