UAW Region 9A has remained essentially unchanged since its formation in 1942, having jurisdiction over locals in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, the eastern part of New York, and Puerto Rico (a recent addition). It was created when the UAW split its Eastern Region, which included New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and parts of Pennsylvania, into two separate regions — 9 and 9A. Charles Kerrigan, its first director (1942-1970), emerged from the region's largest local, amalgamated Local 365 out of Long Island, New York. Kerrigan was succeeded as regional director by Anthony DeLorenzo (1970-1977), Don Ephlin (1977-1980), and E. W. "Ted" Barrett (1980-1986).
The papers of UAW Region 9A include files pertaining to arbitration and grievances, local union finances, negotiations, organizing campaigns, pensions, politics, education, and other activities relating to the administration of the region.
