Scope & Contents

The Welfare Employees Union was organized in December of 1966 to represent clerks, caseworkers, typists and secretaries in the Wayne County Department of Social Services.  Prior to that time, social service workers at the Wayne County Bureau of Social Aid belonged to Michigan Civil Service Employees Local 31-M of the SEIU.  In 1978, the union affiliated with the Organization of Classified State Employees (OCSE)/MEA.

The Welfare Employees Union Collection contains correspondence, reports, minutes, newsletters, grievances and other material relating to the union activities of welfare workers in Detroit and Wayne County.
