George E. Gullen, Jr., 1971-1978

George E. Gullen, Jr. was the sixth president of Wayne State University. Gullen first joined the university as vice president of university relations in 1966, after serving ten years as a vice president of American Motors Corporation. An alumnus of Wayne State University, he was named acting president in 1971 and appointed president in 1972.

During Gullen's presidency, Wayne State University was improved both academically and physically. Gullen initiated an affirmative action policy for the University, firmly established the President's Commission on the Status of Women and appointed the first woman vice president in the university's history. Gullen worked to make the University's Medical School second to none, and during his presidency, it became the largest single-campus medical school in the nation. Gullen was also committed to the university's urban mission and worked tirelessly to improve relations with local political and business leaders, and community groups.

Gullen retired as President in 1978. When he retired, Wayne State University was a premier urban university, but it was about to enter the worst fiscal crisis in its history.
