Detroit’s Greek community rapidly grew between 1910 and 1920, following the 1912 persecution of Greeks by Turkey. The community settled mostly on the East Side, with businesses located in the area now known as “Greektown”. Above, gentlemen gather in a kafeneion (coffee shop), a traditional center of social activities, to discuss the news of the day.
