As the First World War raged on in Europe, Detroit became the destination for many of its refugees. Drawn by family, established ethnic communities, and the promise of work, thousands flocked to the city in hope of rebuilding their lives. Above, young Belgian evacuees wait for guidance from sponsor families and relatives.
