By 1963, the Civil Rights movement was in full swing around the nation, and nowhere was it more apparent than in Detroit. On June 23rd, nearly 200,000 marchers descended on downtown Detroit to protest the police violence against civil rights fighters in Alabama. Among the marchers were luminaries of the civil rights movement Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Walter Reuther of the UAW, and the Rev. C.L. Franklin. It was in Detroit, at this event, that Dr. King first delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
