The Jewish community traces back as one of the earliest immigrant groups of Detroit. By the turn of the century their population had grown to 34,00, making up a significant percentage of the merchant class. The community originally settled on the East Side, around the area, which would later be known as “Black Bottom” and “Paradise Valley”.
