Unions in Detroit swiftly grew in numbers and in size. Meetings were typically held wherever there was enough room to seat members, often the workplace. The United Auto Workers often held meetings outdoors due to the sheer numbers of members. Open-air rallies, often at Cadillac Square near downtown Detroit, were common occurrences.
