Soldiers collecting scrap metal for the war effort, September 26, 1942.
During the war years many standard household items were put into limited production to conserve materials for the war effort. Food, shoes, silk stockings, fabrics, cigarettes, and gasoline were all rationed. In addition, Detroit had an active salvage campaign to recycle materials such as paper, scrap metal, and rubber for reuse in the nearby factories. Families could bring their materials to a designated drop off station, to a “salvage drive”, or if they were lucky, like the family above, they might have the materials picked up at their front stoop.
