Student Soldiers learn to tool a tank by hand at the Chrysler Tank Arsenal, January 1, 1943.,
The Chrysler Tank Arsenal, owned by the government and run by Chrysler, quickly became an indispensable factor in the wartime industry of Detroit. It set the national record for tank production, fabricating nearly one quarter of the 89,568 tanks produced during the war, creating hundreds of jobs, and providing valuable training experience, as seen above, to the soldiers who might eventually drive the tanks to the front lines. The Chrysler Tank Arsenal, completed in April of 1941, continued to provide equipment for national defense until its closure in 1996.
