Detroit’s African-American community grew rapidly between the two World Wars, from 5,741 in 1910 to nearly 500,000 a half-century later. Known as the “Great Migration”, thousand of Southern families were recruited to work in Detroit’s factories. In 1973, Detroit became the first city in America with a population of over one million to have a Black majority.
