In Operation from 1903 to 1986, the International Salt Mines were a labyrinth of over 50 miles of tunnels and byways 1200 feet underneath Southwest Detroit. The mines supplied salt to chemical and agricultural industry throughout the nation, and employed hundreds of workers. The mines re-opened in 1998 under the name the Detroit Salt Mining Company.
