Shipbuilders prepare the Henry Phipps for lake shipping, March 13, 1941.
Prior to the auto industry, shipbuilding was one of the most important industries in Detroit. At the beginning of the 20th of the century the Great Lakes Engineering Co. was the fourth largest employer in the city, and was responsible for both the building and maintenance of many of the ships carrying cargo throughout the Great Lakes. Above, Frank Brown, an employee of the Great Lakes Engineering Company, secures the cross buckles of the anchor chain as John Roach supervises.
