The Metropolitan Detroit Medical Library Group (MDMLG) began as the Biological Sciences Group of the Michigan Chapter of the Special Libraries Association in 1946. The Group's meetings remained largely social until the mid-1950s when the librarians, under the leadership of the Wayne State University Medical Library, experimented with several projects. Since the late 1960s, MDMLG has participated in a number of projects; these include developing an inter-library loan agreement, establishing the Michigan Health Sciences Library Association, and publishing the "Selected List of Biomedical Serials in Metropolitan Detroit". The papers of the Metropolitan Detroit Medical Library Group reflect these activities and the group's involvement in various state, regional, and national library organizations.
