The UAW Research Department carries out a wide range of background investigation for the union concerning the state of the U.S. economy, trade conditions at home and abroad, the economic health of major UAW employers, technology and its impact on the workplace, and general conditions on the shop floor. Their records reflect the primary policy and contractural objectives of the union's leadership and illustrate how the union reached major decisions and what sources of information it employed in formulating primarily economic policies affecting its membership and the wider American public.
