ABOUT THE SWE ARCHIVES

In 1993 the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) designated the Walter P. Reuther Library at Wayne State University the official repository of its historical and archival materials. Since then the collection has expanded to include more than just the SWE organizational records. In addition, biographical files, publications, historical newspaper clippings, personal diaries, photographs, oral histories, and other materials make up a unique and rich collection of engineering and women's history. Materials in the SWE Archives tell the dynamic and pioneering story of American women who, facing an almost systematic resistance to female participation in the engineering profession, challenged gender stereotypes and promoted the rights of all individuals to pursue careers in science and engineering.

Prior to the Reuther, the Society’s records were collected and maintained by the SWE Archives Committee, established in 1957. This nationally standing committee remains actively involved in the Archives in an advisory capacity by overseeing projects and providing fund development through the Amy C. Spears Archives Memorial Fund.
